PART TWO; THE HISTORY
Significant historical events have occurred in and around the Valles Caldera. These events range from it being the homeland of the Jemez Pueblo Indians, a privately owned ranch, discovery of crucial scientific data need to finalize the theory of Plate Tectonics, discovery of Resurgent Dome structures and to the training grounds for Apollo Astronauts. Part two of the Trilogy examines the history of this land.
- A re-enactment of the geologic core drilling done in the early 1960’s which was instrumental in finalizing the theory of plate tectonics.
- The Preserve is currently used for high altitude grazing experiments and thus we will chat with cowboys working the ranch to explore the history of ranching on this land when it was privately owned.
- Homeland to the Jemez Pueblo, we willl explore the Obsidian Quarry that sparked trade routes spreading Obsidian arrowheads as far east as Kansas and examine the cultural importance of this land to tribes of the area.
- In the 1960’s the Apollo astronauts were brought to the Caldera to be trained by Bob Smith, the premier Volcanologist of the time. They learned what kinds of rocks to bring back from the Moon and Bob was the first to examine the moon rocks when they were examined at Cape Canaveral.
This circle of volcanoes within a volcano contain a vast amount of ground-breaking history.
We are currently seeking funding for Part Two and Three of the trilogy. Interest and excitement is high following our recent Premier screening of the film in the Lockheed Martin DynaTheater at The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque, NM. The filming of Part 1: The Science gave us incredible access and connections with most of the critical players in the Valles Caldera Story. The programs will each be distributed to PBS and V Me and be available as a 3 series DVD set for worldwide distribution.
